Wireless Communication and Types – The term Wireless Communication was introduced in the 19th century and in the following years, wireless communication has evolved. This is the most important means of transmitting information from one device to another. In this technique, information can be transmitted through air without the need of any cable or wiring or other electronic conductor, such as by using electromagnetic waves like IR, RF, satellite, etc.

What is Wireless Communication?

Wireless Communication and Types – Wireless communication is the fastest growing area in the communication field. Wireless communication are a method of transmitting the information which is one point to the another without using any connection, like wires, cables or any physical medium. Generally, in a communication system, transmitters are transmitted from the transmitter to the receiver, which is kept at a limited distance. With the help of wireless communication, the transmitter and receiver can be placed anywhere between a few meters (such as TV remote control) for several thousand kilometres (Satellite Communication). There are some wireless communication systems commonly used in our day-to-day life: Mobile phones, GPS receivers, remote controls, Bluetooth audio and Wi-Fi etc.

The communication system can be wired or wireless and the medium used for communication can be guided or unguided. In wired communication, the medium can be a physical path such as co-axial cables, twisted pair cables and optical fiber links, which guide the signal from one point to another.

Such a medium is called a guided medium. On the other hand, wireless communication does not require any physical medium, but it promotes the signal through space. Because, space allows only for signal transmission without any guidance, so the medium used in wireless communication is called Unguided Medium. If there is no physical medium, how does wireless communication transmit signals? Regardless of the cable used in Wireless Communication, the signal is completed with the transmission and reception antenna.

Antennae are electrical appliances that turn electrical signals into radio signals as electromagnetic (EM) waves and vice versa. These electromagnetic waves spread through the space. Therefore, both the transmitter and the receiver have an antenna.

In the present day, the wireless communication system has become an essential part of various types of wireless communication devices, which allows the user to communicate with remote operated areas. Wireless communication such as mobiles. Cordless telephones, Zigbee wirelss technology, GPS, Wi-Fi, satellite television and wireless computer parts. Current wireless phones include 3G and 4G networks, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi technology.

History of Wireless Communication

In the year 1897, Guglielmo Marconi successfully demonstrated wireless telegraphy by sending EM waves for a short distance of 100 meters. This demonstration paved the way for radio communication, the radio word was taken from Radiant Energy.

In the beginning of 1900, Trans-Atlantic Radio Broadcasting was established, where Marconi successfully transmitted the message as Morse Code. Since then, the technology related to Wireless Communication and Wireless systems have been rapidly upgraded and thus enables broadcasts over low cost with affordable devices.

During the development of Wireless Communication, many wireless systems and methods were developed, the best example is communication and television transmission. But the rapid growth of mobile communications began to change the complex wired telephone system. In this scenario, the wired technology became obsolete and replaced by Wireless Communication.

These two examples show that with the development of technology, we have to always choose what is best for the situation i.e. in some areas we would be good to use wired communication and in some areas, wireless may be a better option is.

Wireless Communication and Types – Today, people need a lot of things for mobile phones such as talking, internet, multimedia etc. All these services should be made available to the user on mobile, with the help of these wireless communications services, we can transfer voice, data, video, images etc. Wireless communication systems also provide various services like video conferencing, cellular telephones, paging, TV, radio etc. Different types of wireless communication systems are developed due to the need for various types of communication services.

Satellite Communication Networks provide worldwide coverage for population density. Satellite communication systems depend on other wireless services such as mobile, television broadcasts and other radio systems, satellite communication systems such as telecommunication (satellite phones), positioning and navigation (GPS), broadcast, internet, etc.

Mobile Telephone Communication System

Perhaps the most commonly used wireless communication technology is mobile phone technology. The development of mobile cellular devices has changed the world like any other technology. Today’s mobile phones are not limited to calling only but are integrated with many other features like Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS and FM radio.

Global Positioning System (GPS)

GPS is a subcategory of fully communicating. With the help of GPS dedicated GPS receivers and satellites, various wireless services such as navigation, positioning, location, speed etc. provides.

Infrared Communication

Infrared Communication is another common used of wireless communication in our daily life. It uses infrared waves of electromagnetic (EM) spectrum. Infrared communication is used in remote control of television, car, audio equipment, etc.


Bluetooth is another significant low-level wireless communication system. Almost all mobile phones, tablets and laptops are equipped with Bluetooth devices. They can be connected to wireless Bluetooth receivers, audio devices, cameras etc.


Although it is considered an obsolete technique, paging was a major success before the widespread of mobile phones. Provides information as paging messages and it is a simple system that means the user can only receive messages.

Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN)

Wireless Local Area Network or WLAN (Wi-Fi) is a wireless internet related service. Using WLAN, different devices such as laptops and mobile phones can connect to an access point and access the internet.


It is a low-power, wireless mesh network that works in the following radio bands: 868MHz, 915MHz, and 2.4GHz.

Z Wave

This is a relatively new wireless home automation protocol. It uses very little power and runs on a network net. The device communicates around 900MHz in a sub-gigahertz frequency range.


Light Fidelity or Li-Fi uses the visual field of the electromagnetic spectrum for communication. It can be easily used at places where there is a restriction on Bluetooth, IR and Wi-Fi because it uses light instead of radio waves.
