Overactive thyroid gland

Hyperthyroidism nausea – Having an overactive thyroid gland can result in the overactivity of the metabolism creating an imbalance in energy production and consumption.

Excess of thyroid hormones can be caused due to a lot of reasons like nodule formation ion the thyroid, consumption of thyroid hormone medication, tumour in the thyroid, autoimmune thyroid disorder etc.

Symptoms such as tiredness, fatigue, cramps, fever, throat pain, breathing difficulty, hypertension, joint pain, rashes etc. are experienced by someone suffering from hyperthyroidism. Among all the symptoms the most worrisome and exasperating can be nausea.

Hyperthyroidism nausea can be caused due to a number of reasons. The body’s metabolism is affected by the excess amounts of thyroid hormones.

Hyperthyroidism nausea could be the result of hyperacidity

Hyperthyroidism nausea could be the result of hyperacidity and disturbance in the homoeostasis caused due to elevated levels of the thyroid hormones. The iodine consumption in the body suffers. Due to the energy imbalance, the person can feel dizziness as well.

Sometimes iodine, a non-metallic element, is used to treat hyperthyroidism. However, iodine-based drugs have shown to cause an unwanted side effect in the form of a rash. The small reaction may appear on people sensitive to iodine.

According to a study, almost four per cent of hyperthyroid cases experiences nausea as one of the major symptoms! Most commonly, it is reported in females.

Can cause a lot of burning sensation

The study goes on to state that with increasing age, hyperthyroidism nausea increases, present in almost thirty-seven per cent of older people above the age of sixty. When hyperthyroidism nausea occurs, it is almost moderately severe to severe and can cause a lot of burning sensation.

Hyperthyroidism nausea is accompanied by a feeling of vomiting but, the person may not actually vomit. There are varying levels of energy throughout the day with hyperacidity and excessive sweating.

Increasing thyroid hormones

Another commonly noticed symptom in hyperthyroidism is heat intolerance. The increasing thyroid hormones make it difficult for the immune system to work efficiently and fight any external threats to the body. Lowered immunity and vitality is also responsible for hyperthyroidism nausea.

Many times, the doctor advises forgetting some scanning done, in case he suspects enlargement of the thyroid. Some patients feel a lump in the throat while swallowing saliva or when eating food. Can be aggravated in such cases.

Ultrasonography (USG)

Ultrasonography (USG) often reveals tumour or swelling of the thyroid gland. In such cases, appropriate treatment becomes necessary. Treatment of hyperthyroidism consists of surgically removing the thyroid or radioisotope drugs or other hormone replacement strategies as deemed fit by the endocrinologist.

Once the thyroid hormone levels reduce, symptoms of hyperthyroidism nausea may also reduce. Generally, all the symptoms of hyperthyroidism, in general, disappear with the treatment of the root cause.

Hyperthyroidism nausea can also be treated individually using medicines like antiemetics. Nausea may exist due to some other conditions as well. Food poisoning, depression, stress and excessive travelling can all cause nausea.

Natural management techniques

Hyperthyroidism nausea needs to be distinguished from among all these and treated accordingly. There are certain natural management techniques that can prove effective, instead of popping in more medicines. Ginger decoctions help reduce the bouts of hyperthyroidism nausea.

Having small frequent meals would help in preventing hyperacidity and nausea. Acupressure is also a good modality to treat hyperthyroidism nausea. Chewing of mint leaves can ward off nausea and promote digestion as well.

Well, planned nutrition and diet along with herbal supplements can do wonders in the treatment of hyperthyroidism, thereby reducing hyperthyroidism nausea as well. Sometimes, substituting prescription drugs with newer ones can also help reduce nausea.

However, professional advice is a must in modifying any type of medication. Regular monitoring of thyroid levels and consulting the physician is also helpful in treating thyroid disease and hyperthyroidism nausea.
